BHS principal Miller moving to district job

Buford High Principal Rodney Miller is moving to the district office to fill a new position – director of career and technology education.
As CATE director, Miller will work to expand internships with local businesses, coordinate programs, and find teachers for career and tech courses.

 

79-year-old dies after car hits her outside her home

A Lancaster woman was fatally struck by a car while crossing Memorial Park Road to get to her mailbox Thursday afternoon.
Johnnie Mae Hinson, 79, was airlifted directly to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where she later died from her injuries, according to Lancaster County Coroner Karla Deese.
Ke’von Drakeford, 17, of Heath Springs hit Hinson about 3 p.m. when she stepped in front of his 2000 Chevy Impala, according to Highway Patrol Cpl. Bill Rhyne.

 

2 motorcylcles collide in Elgin

Two motorcycles collided Thursday evening in the Elgin community, killing one of the riders and seriously injuring the other.

 

Indian Land post office in the works

Indian Land may finally be getting its own post office.
The U.S. Postal Service last week notified Lancaster County officials that plans are under way for a “new retail and delivery services facility project” in the fast-growing community of more than 20,000 residents.
County council Chairman Steve Harper received a letter from USPS real estate specialist Michael K. Bullard, saying a possible site has been selected and a public meeting about the plan will be held this month.

 

Heath Springs might do without municipal court

HEATH SPRINGS – Now that Heath Springs no longer has a law enforcement officer on regular patrol – a move to save the town money – officials are considering doing away with municipal court and asking county magistrates to handle any cases that come along.
After all, the logic goes, without police patrols, chances are there won’t be a lot of cases for municipal court to handle.

 

Pedestrian dies after being hit by car

A pedestrian was hit by a car on Memorial Park Road in Lancaster just after 3 p.m. Thursday and later died from the injuries.

The victim stepped out in front of a 2000 Chevy Impala driven by 17-year-old Ke’von Drakeford of Heath Springs, according to Highway Patrol Cpl. Bill Rhyne. Drakeford was not charged in the case.

The victim, whose name has not been released, was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

17 year old shot Friday night on Arch Street

A teenager is in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center after being shot Friday night on the 400 block of Arch Street.
Lancaster Police Department Chief Scott Grant said the victim was 17 years old, but his name is not being released yet.
Police responded to Springs Memorial Hospital just before 10:30 p.m. Friday after nearly a dozen gunshots were reported along that block. The crime scene is almost across the street from the Municipal Justice Center.  
Emergency room staff treated the victim before he was flown to CMC.

 

Mickles resigns teaching job

Phillip Mickles has resigned from his teaching position at Barr Street Learning Center.
The resignation became official after a vote during Tuesday night’s Lancaster County school board meeting.
Mickles was placed on administrative leave in April after an allegation of improper discipline of a student. The Lancaster Police Department investigated the incident and did not charge Mickles with a crime, but he was not reinstated to his job at that time.

 

‘Astounding’ electronic art

Art created electronically on tablets was unveiled Wednesday at a public reception for the artists and community members at the Springs House in Lancaster.
