NO SAUSAGE?! Fight over pizza toppings results in felony charge

A late-night altercation between brothers over pizza toppings led to a confrontation with sheriff’s deputies and a felony weapon charge against one of the combatants.
Lancaster County sheriff’s deputies responded to 3498 Oakridge Road, Heath Springs, about 1:22 a.m. Saturday after someone reported a fight going on, according to the incident report.
The reporting deputy said when he knocked on the door, Dekelvin Hughes, 31, told him nothing was going on, then slammed the door in his face and locked it.

Panel issues no decision on IL incorporation

COLUMBIA – A legislative committee questioned Indian Land incorporation proponents for nearly two hours Friday, but ended the hearing with no decision, saying it would meet again at some unspecified date.
About 17 people representing both sides of the incorporation issue attended Voters for a Town of Indian Land’s (VTIL) hearing before the Joint Legislative Committee on Municipal Incorporation in Columbia. If the committee approves, voters get to decide the issue.

 

Probate judge will not seek another term

Sandy Estridge, Lancaster County’s probate judge for 22 years, announced Tuesday that she will not run for reelection next year.
“I’m ready to retire…. I didn’t plan on working this long,” said the 70-year-old Estridge, who is serving her sixth term in office.
“My children want me to spend more time with the family, so that’s what I’m going to do,” she said.

 

30 years in prison for Tran’s murderer

David Kucinski was sentenced to 30 years in prison Tuesday in the last year’s killing of 20-year-old Randy Tran in Indian Land.

 

17-year-old shooting victim dies

Daquan Blackmon, a 17-year-old shot Friday night on East Arch Street in downtown Lancaster, has died at Carolinas Medical Center.
Blackmon suffered a single gunshot wound in the incident, which happened within sight of the Municipal Justice Center, according to a Lancaster Police Department press release.

Former TLN Publisher David Ernest dies at 65

David Ernest, who guided The Lancaster News as publisher for a decade, died Friday in Columbia after a two-year battle with cancer, surrounded by his wife and daughters. He was 65.
