Old mill site in Kershaw will get toxic assessment

KERSHAW – We’re finally going to find out what lies beneath the concrete pad at the abandoned Springs Industries property.
The EPA has awarded a three-year $600,000 grant to the Catawba Regional Council of Governments (COG) to conduct environmental assessments at potentially contaminated brownfield sites in Lancaster, Chester, Union and York counties.
“It’s a start,” said Kershaw Mayor Mark Dorman, noting that the 9.1-acre site has been an eyesore since 2013, when the abandoned textile mill was torn down.

 

Plan to quicken Panhandle EMS response

Lancaster County officials are eying a 2-acre tract on Old Bailes Road near the intersection of S.C. 160 and Calvin Hall Road as the site for a new EMS station that would improve Panhandle response times.
The vacant, triangular-shaped property is on the east side of Old Bailes near Bailes Ridge Business Park. The $150,000 tract is between Frameport America and Honeywell Scanning & Mobility.
“We’ve been pushing for this about three years,” said Lancaster County EMS Director Clay Catoe.

 

Deputies respond to rumor at Rucker

Sheriff’s deputies showed up at A.R. Rucker Middle School Friday morning in response to rumors that someone was planning a shooting at the school.
School district Safety and Transportation Director Bryan Vaughn said the rumors sparked an investigation but turned up no evidence.

 

3 charged in Fairway Drive drug raid

Three Lancaster residents were arrested Tuesday on drug-trafficking and weapons charges at a home on Fairway Drive.

 

Give Local effort includes 50 nonprofits

The third-annual Give Local Lancaster 24-hour fundraising campaign is Tuesday, with a goal to top the $155,000 raised last year.
It’s a one-stop philanthropy event, at which online donors can choose among dozens of local nonprofits selected and screened by the organizers. This year’s list is 50 nonprofits, up from 42 last year.
To give, go to www.GiveLocalLancaster.org. A minimum of $20 is required for an online donation. Donations can be given anonymously or in honor or in memory of someone.

 

Top state honors go to 3 local businesses

COLUMBIA – Three Lancaster County businesses made a clean sweep of the state’s annual Impact Industries awards Thursday, winning the top honors for small, medium-sized and large companies in the 11-county grouping Lancaster in part of.
On Thursday, Gov. Henry McMaster named Movement Mortgage (large), PCI Group (medium) and Fab Fours (small) as the winners for the Tier II counties. Coordinated by the S.C. Commerce Department, the awards recognize Palmetto State companies for business success, economic impact and community involvement.
