Early heat wave this weekend

After a prolonged winter and short spring, get ready for a mid-summery heat wave this weekend.
Lancaster County temperatures are expected to reach the 90s from today through Monday, with lows in the mid-60s, according to the National Weather Service. Record-setting high temperatures are possible.
Today’s targeted high is 91 degrees, with a scorching 94 Saturday, 95 Sunday and 92 Monday. Tuesday will drop back to a more typical 86.

Nearby shooting shuts down both AJ schools

Two Lancaster County schools were locked down at 2:10 p.m. Thursday after a shooting at Pineridge Drive in Kershaw, according to the Lancaster County School District.

Andrew Jackson Middle and High schools were placed on lockdown, and parents were notified of the lockdowns via the Remind app.

 

Norrell to join Democratic gubernatorial ticket

S.C. Rep. James Smith, who is running to be the Democratic nominee for governor, will visit Lancaster Friday afternoon, where he is expected to announce that Lancaster native Rep. Mandy Powers Norrell will join his ticket as a candidate for lieutenant governor.
James and Norrell are scheduled to make a joint campaign appearance Friday to make the announcement public, confirmed a campaign official who was not allowed to speak on the record.
The campaign event is set for 2 p.m. at the Springs House, located at 201 W. Gay St.

 

Lancaster man charged with attempted murder

A Lancaster man was charged with attempted murder after a domestic dispute broke out Monday afternoon among family members on Antler Road.
Darrell Montrey Mingo, 25, was charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.
According to Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Doug Barfield, Mingo was in the driver’s seat of his Mazda pickup when he began arguing with his uncle and fired once out of the passenger window.

 

Lancaster man dies in strange road incident

A 39-year-old Lancaster man died in a bizarre incident on U.S. 21 in Chester County early Monday.
According to the Chester County Coroner’s Office, the man shot himself while driving about 8 a.m., then crossed the centerline and collided with a logging truck heading the opposite direction.
The man’s name was not immediately released.

 

Another growth spurt for Van Wyck

The little town of Van Wyck has grown a little bit bigger.
In a unanimous vote, minus council member Xavier Kee who was absent, the Van Wyck Town Council on Monday agreed to voluntarily annex 38 more properties to the recently created town.
With the vote, the rural municipality created late last year as an antidote to the possible incorporation of adjacent, urbanized Indian Land, is now nearly 9.5 square miles, according to Mayor Sean Corcoran and council member Richard Vaughan.

 

82 USCL grads cross the finish line

Karen Young, 71, was smiling ear to ear as she accepted her degree from USC Lancaster Dean Walt Collins on Saturday – the oldest of 82 grads to take the stage.
