LANE: New election machinery will be welcome

I am not here to tell you that the Elections Systems & Software company’s DS850 high-speed scanner and tabulator will improve democracy in Volusia County.But at least we’ll know earlier on election night which ill-qualified candidate a confused electorate picked by a narrow margin.And doesn’t that count for something?I speak as a person who spent many late-night hours in the basement of the historic Volusia County Courthouse in DeLand watching piles of ballots being fed into the current tabulating machines. A painstaking process.

Greene 23rd, Perry 33rd through two days of Florida Open

DeBary's Keith Greene is tied for 23rd and Port Orange's Rod Perry tied for 33rd through two rounds of the three-day Florida Open in Jacksonville.Greene shot 74 on Saturday and is at 3-under 141 through 36 holes. Perry shot 74 and is at 2 under. Jacksonville amateur John Jonas leads at 13 under after rounds of 63-68 at Timuquana Country Club.Ormond Beach's Tom Bryant (73-71) is at even par and tied for 49th in the field of 142. 

 

Wind wreaks havoc, forces Monday finish at British Open as Johnson leads

Finally! The second round of the British Open is over nearly 39 hours after it began.Play was suspended more than three hours Friday because of heavy rain, and then halted for nearly 10.5 hours on Saturday by high winds.The third round is now set for Sunday, followed by the first Monday finish at the Open since 1988.American Dustin Johnson is the 36-hole leader with a 10-under 134, one shot ahead of England's Danny Willett, and two ahead of Scotland's Paul Lawrie, the 1999 Open champion.

Colee, Burnham win Daytona Junior Golf Championship

DeLand's Lisa Colee and Palmetto Bay's David Burnham were overall winners in the Daytona Beach Junior Golf Championship, played Thursday and Friday at Daytona Beach Golf Club.Colee, 13, won the girls division with rounds of 82-83. Burnham, 18, won the boys division with 72-75. 

 

Tributes pour in for Formula 1 driver Jules Bianchi

NICE, France — Tributes poured in for French driver Jules Bianchi, who died from injuries sustained in a head-on crash during the Japanese Grand Prix last October.
The 25-year-old Bianchi died in a hospital in his hometown of Nice, his family said in a statement released early Saturday.
Nice was about 30 kilometers (20 miles) from the track where he sealed the best performance of his young Formula One career, the Monaco Grand Prix.

DAYTONA BEACHSada Bradshaw has been hired as a graphic artist at Benedict Advertising and Marketing. In her new role, Bradshaw will develop the layout and production design for client advertising and marketing materials in a wide variety of media outlets. She recently graduated from Full Sail University with a bachelor's degree in digital art and design, and has been interning at Benedict since February.Kirsten Pindar has joined the Domestic Abuse Council of Volusia County Inc. as the shelter manager.

 

What's New

WROD 1340AM and 104.7FM, known as The Rock of Daytona, was sold to Miracle Media Group. Under the new ownership, the stations will include an interactive experience for listeners where they can be part of the broadcasts from inside the upcoming Classic Rock Café on Beach Street in Daytona Beach. Station Owner and Company President, Patricia Miracle, purchased the building at 242 S. Beach St. and is currently broadcasting from that location while renovations continue and the café takes shape.
