Auschwitz survivor: Only coincidence that I lived

MOSCOW – The 75 years since Yevgeny Kovalev was a teenage prisoner in Auschwitz have been marked by tormented memories and a wonder that he’s still alive.

“Remembering all that is always like torture for me, can you imagine that? I’m even wondering myself how I could survive those times,” the 92-year-old retired Russian factory worker told The Associated Press ahead of the 75th anniversary Monday of the liberation of Auschwitz by the Red Army.

District 155 network monitoring systems infected with ransomware, superintendent says

Crystal Lake Community High School District 155's computers were infected with ransomware on Friday, according to an email sent to parents on Monday afternoon.

Superintendent Steve Olson wrote in the email on Monday, which was shared by a parent with the Northwest Herald, that the district's network monitoring systems detected the virus on a number of Windows computers on Friday.

McDermed urges Illinois Tollway to stop 'oversharing'

State Rep. Margo McDermed, R-Mokena, recently filed legislation to prevent the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority from "frivolously" giving out personal information.

McDermed said in a news release she filed her bill, H.B. 4006, in an effort to protect individual privacy.

"There are some serious privacy issues that need to be addressed at the tollway,” McDermed said.

 

Building of new Harvard police station tentatively to go out for bid in March

The city tentatively is scheduling to go out to bid for a new police station by March 30, Harvard City Administrator Dave Nelson said on Monday.

Earlier this year, the Harvard City Council approved a $5 million bond issuance for the new police station and possible improvements to Harvard City Hall, 201 W. Diggins St. The city would be required to pay a total of $330,000 annually over the course of the 20-year loan with a 2.65% interest rate.

 

Wisconsin man faces fleeing, trespassing charges after confining himself inside Woodstock home

A traffic stop that began on Friday in Woodstock ended with the arrest of a Wisconsin man whom police say fled by car and on foot before seeking refuge in a nearby house.

McHenry County Sheriff's deputies arrested Juan V. Hernandez, 27, about 3 p.m. Friday – the day before his 27th birthday – on multiple felony charges.

 

Jury selection underway in misdemeanor animal cruelty trial

Jury selection began on Monday in the case of a former McHenry man who says his outward support of President Donald Trump led neighbors to falsely accuse him of beating his dog.

During a line of questioning Monday, 49-year-old Michael Braun asked potential jurors about the movie "Cujo," how they voted in the 2016 presidential election, and whether they have any association with "the far left animal rights group" American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Sandoval charged with bribery, tax evasion

SPRINGFIELD – Former state Sen. Martin Sandoval was formally charged in federal court Monday with bribery and tax fraud.

The indictment comes one day before lawmakers are set to return to Springfield for the 2020 legislative session.

Sandoval, a Chicago Democrat whose Statehouse offices were raided by federal agents in September, resigned from office in November. His resignation took effect Jan. 1, and he has since been succeeded by former Rep.
