Shots for other viruses offer clues in race for Zika vaccine

WASHINGTON — Scientists are racing to create a Zika vaccine, and while they’re starting from scratch against a poorly understood disease, copying shots for similar viruses offers a head start.
A variety of potential candidates are being pursued: Simple DNA vaccines, made with only a few genes from the virus; some made from killed or inactivated virus, much like a standard flu shot; others made with live but weakened virus.

Georgia Ports Authority officer and vehicle fall into Savannah River

A Georgia Ports Authority police officer and police vehicle went into the Savannah River at Georgia Ports Authority’s Ocean Terminal just after 2 p.m. Monday, Ports Authority Spokesman Robert Morris said. The officer was able to escape the river, though the means of the escape are not known at this time, Morris said. The officer was examined by emergency medical services at the scene and was transported to Candler Hospital. Morris said the officer was in good condition and is not expected to have sustaned any serious injuries.

Savannah-Chatham police arrest 2 in hotel parking garage auto break ins

Savannah-Chatham police arrested two men Monday after several recent entering auto reports at the Embassy Suites hotel parking garage on the 600 block of West Oglethorpe Avenue.Around 2:30 a.m. Saturday, metro officers were called to an entering auto in progress and were able to successfully apprehend Trayvon Marshall, 23, and Curtis Robinson, 29.Investigators believe Marshall and Robinson are linked to approximately six entering auto cases that occured between Feb. 24 and March 1 at the hotel.

 

Unidentified woman hurt in early Monday Savannah crash

The Savannah-Chatham police department’s Major Accident Investigations Team responded to a serious wreck involving a pedestrian and a vehicle just after 7 a.m. Monday
An unidentified female pedestrian was reportedly running between southbound and northbound lanes of traffic, for an unknown reason, on Ogeechee Road, said Darnisha Green, police spokeswoman.
Roosevelt Smith, 83, was traveling in the left southbound lane when his vehicle, a Honda Civic, collided with the female pedestrian.
