Storms injure several in Georgia, cause damage in Alabama

ATLANTA — Severe weather rolled through Alabama, Georgia and Florida overnight with a suspected tornado injuring several people in southwest Georgia, authorities said Thursday.
Two people were seriously injured when a trailer home was destroyed in Dickey, in Calhoun County, National Weather Service meteorologist Jeff Fournier said. They had to be taken to a hospital but were conscious.
He said several other people received less serious injuries when trailer homes were overturned in Edison, also in Calhoun County.

 

Michelle Obama helps students plant garden in east Georgia

WAYNESBORO — First lady Michelle Obama joined students Thursday to plant a garden at a middle school in east Georgia.
Obama, who visited the Burke County Middle School in Waynesboro accompanied by television personality Al Roker, is on her American Garden Tour, aimed at highlighting the impact and benefits of diverse gardens across the country. Obama also has been running a campaign to encourage people to eat fresh foods, and to promote the study of science, technology engineering and math.

 

IS abducts dozens of workers near Damascus, fighting worsens

BEIRUT — In a brazen assault near the Syrian capital, Islamic State militants abducted 300 cement workers and contractors from their workplace northeast of Damascus on Thursday, as fighting against the extremist group raged in the country’s north ahead of a new round of peace talks.
In a blow to the Islamic militants, however, rebel fighters wrested control of a northern border town, potentially undermining IS supply lines across the border with Turkey and endangering one of its most important strongholds in Aleppo province.

 

Finances threaten to close operations at Port Royal docks

PORT ROYAL, S.C. — Unless things start to improve the town of Port Royal may have to end operations at the town shrimp docks.
The Beaufort Gazette reports that operating the docks has long been a strain on town finances. And the situation was made worse by a fire last year that destroyed an adjacent seafood market and a machine that made ice that kept the shrimp fresh.
Now shrimpers are behind on rent and the dock has generated only about $175,000 of the $500,000 expected to come in this fiscal year.
