KINGSPORT — If you’re not a regular visitor to the Kingsport Public Library, the staff there wants to know why.
That’s one of the reasons the library has launched a community survey on its website: www.kingsportlibrary.org. It’s to ask folks who come to the library and those who don’t about what services and programs they use and what they would like to see happen with the library.
The survey went live last week and will remain open until Sept. 25. If you’re not comfortable taking an online survey, there are paper copies available at the library.

SURGOINSVILLE — An 18-year-old Surgoinsville woman was nearly taken in by an IRS arrest scam Wednesday, but her mother stopped her before any money was paid.
Surgoinsville Police Department Chief James Hammonds told the Times News that the scammer’s caller ID number that appeared on the victim’s phone was the same as SPD’s Central Dispatch line.
On Wednesday, a Surgoinsville woman told Hammonds her daughter received a call from a local number from a man who identified himself as an IRS agent.

WISE — A Wise County grand jury returned indictments against 58 people Wednesday.
— James Morrison Johnson, 28, 5639 Flatwoods Road, Rose Hill, was indicted on three felony counts of attempted first-degree murder, use of a firearm in commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The charges stem from a Dec. 8, 2018 attack against a man. Conviction on the charges could result in a maximum 18 year prison term.

MOUNT CARMEL — The Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted 5-2 Thursday to keep City Administrator Mike Housewright after two citizens, the mayor, and an aldermen spoke out in his favor.
An ordinance requested last month by Alderman Steven McLain to eliminate Housewright’s position was presented to the BMA at its regular monthly meeting.
However, McLain stated he didn’t approve of the ordinance draft as it was presented to the BMA Thursday because it transferred the city administrator’s power to hire, fire and discipline employees to the department heads.

BULLS GAP — Deputies from Hawkins and Greene counties seized more that $10,000 worth of meth and nearly $4,000 in cash while executing a search warrant Tuesday at the home of a man known as “Milk Man.”
According to a report filed by Hawkins County Sheriff Ronnie Lawson, the Greene County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team assisted the Greene County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics Unit and the Hawkins County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Unit in executing a search warrant at 2600 Gap Creek Road, Bulls Gap as part of an investigation into the sale and delivery of meth.

JONESBOROUGH — Just as David Crockett’s football game with Ooltewah was getting interesting, Mother Nature intervened.
With Crockett leading 19-16 late in the third quarter at Pioneer Field, lightning struck in the area, causing a lengthy delay.
The game was finally suspended after a wait of an hour and 40 minutes and won’t be resumed unless it affects either team’s playoff chances at the end of the season.
There was 1:17 remaining in the third quarter.

KINGSPORT — Dobyns-Bennett and quarterback Zane Whitson got off to a rousing start Friday night at J. Fred Johnson Stadium.
Whitson, a 6-foot-1 junior, completed 9 of 18 passes for 145 yards and rushed for another 38 yards to lead the Indians to a 33-13 victory over Tennessee High.
Aiding Whitson’s efforts was a two-headed rushing attack powered by Phillip Armitage and Tyler Tesnear, who combined for 95 yards in the first game between the teams since 2016.

NORTON — Wise Central used a balanced ground game and three touchdown passes to take a 27-7 win over Marion in a preseason benefit game at Tommy McAmis Field on Friday.
The tuneup for the start of the regular season next week was an impressive one for the Warriors. But coach Luke Owens said his team still has plenty to work on before its opener at Wise County rival Eastside on Aug. 30.
“I thought the effort was there, I just thought we were sloppy at times,” Owens said. “Things broke down and some untimely penalties killed some drives there in the first half.

KINGSPORT — The Kingsport Mets keep pushing for the Appalachian League postseason.
The K-Mets scored six runs over the first two innings and put away the Bluefield Blue Jays 8-5 on Friday at Hunter Wright Stadium.
Kingsport (31-32) is two games back of West Division-leading Johnson City (33-30) and just a half-game behind Bristol (31-31) for second place.
Anthony Dirocie led the way for Kingsport, going 3-for-5 — including a solo home run in the sixth inning and a double — and scored twice.
