Fire rips through downtown Bend businesses in 1913

Compiled by Don Hoiness from archived copies of The Bulletin at the Des Chutes Historical Museum.100 YEARS AGOFor the week endingSept. 14, 1913$35,000 loss caused by fireShortly before midnight Friday night fire broke out in the rear of the Patterson Drug Company’s store on Wall Street, and before the flames were extinguished the Patterson building and that occupied by the R.M. Smith Clothing Company were completely destroyed. Everything in the Patterson store was lost, but a large portion of Smith’s stock was rushed out by volunteers.

Library to offer Constitution series

The Deschutes Public Library system is offering a five-part series titled “Let’s Talk About It: Making Sense of American Constitutionalism," led by OSU-Cascades professor James Foster from October to December.The Constitution lecture series will kick off with a keynote address that Harvard Law professor Mark Tushnet will offer via a Skype connection to the downtown library’s Brooks Room at 2 p.m. Oct. 6.

 

Bulletin seeks bazaar events

The Bulletin is accepting submissions for a list of fairs and bazaars through the holiday season.The Community Life section will publish a calendar Oct. 27. Each submitted event must include a brief description of what will be sold, dates, times, location, admission price and a contact phone number. The deadline for submission is Oct.
