Pritzker's proposal to increase beer tax has fight brewing

Craft brewers, distributors and retail advocates held a news conference Friday to argue that beer is already taxed enough, and that adding more taxes will only make it harder for small businesses to expand in the emerging craft-beer industry.

MTD sets meetings May 30, June 6 for public input on service, route changes

The MTD doesn't plan to make formal presentations at these meetings, so the public can drop by at any time during both sessions to comment or ask questions.

URBANA — The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District plans to hold two meetings to hear comments from the public about its service and share information about planned route changes.

 

Housing authority to take applications for Hayes Homes starting June 3

URBANA — The Housing Authority of Champaign County is set to begin accepting preliminary applications for a waiting list for its Hayes Homes for older adults in need of rental assistance.
The list for one-bedroom apartments at 401 E. High St., U, will open at 12:01 a.m. June 3 and remain open until the end of the day July 31.

Champaign man who allegedly had stolen gun at Legion facing charges

Calem Hairston, 19, was charged with possession of a stolen firearm, unlawful use of weapons without a FOID card, aggravated unlawful use of weapons and unlawful possession of a handgun, all felony offenses.

URBANA — A 19-year-old Champaign man who allegedly had a stolen gun on him at a popular Champaign night spot Thursday has been criminally charged.
