Inslee aims to revamp student aid

SEATTLE — For almost 50 years, Washington has written billions of dollars in financial-aid checks to Washington college students through a program with a most uninspiring name: the State Need Grant.
Now Gov. Jay Inslee wants to give the program a big boost in funding, and to rename it with a sunnier moniker.

 

Ellen Burton selected as new Camas city councilor

CAMAS — The Camas City Council filled a vacancy at a special meeting Tuesday night, selecting Ellen Burton as the newest city councilor.
Burton, a 21-year resident of the city, is retired from a career in global technology. She is a leadership adviser for the C4 Career Tech Education Consortium and is a Master Gardener with Washington State University Extension.

 

United Airlines shares get boost

CHICAGO — United Airlines executives say business travelers are booking flights at a faster clip than a year ago.
The airline said Wednesday that business-travel bookings in the first week of January rose 11 percent from a year ago. On top of its quarterly earnings that beat expectations, the comments helped boost United’s stock almost 7 percent in afternoon trading.

 

Girls basketball: Washougal 64, Mark Morris 24

McKinley Stotts led Washougal with 18 points and eight steals to help the Panthers remain undefeated in 2A Greater St. Helens League play at 7-0.
Stotts also added four rebounds in three steals for the Panthers (11-4 overall). Skylar Bea had a double-double of 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Girls basketball: Ridgefield 38, Columbia River 22

Sophomore center Alicia Andrew notched her second triple-double in four games and took over in the final two quarters, coach Tom Klutz said to help the Spudders win for the third time in four games.
Andrew finished with a team-best 15 points, 21 rebounds and 11 blocks. She had 19 points, 25 rebounds and 10 blocks in a Jan. 4 overtime win at R.A. Long.
Andrew had 13 of her 15 points in the second half, including nine in the third when the Spudders outscored River 17-5 after trailing by one at halftime.
