The percentage of TSA airport screeners missing work has hit 10 percent as the partial government shutdown stretches into its fifth week.
The Transportation Security Administration said Monday that Sunday’s absence rate compared to 3.1 percent on the comparable Sunday a year ago.
The workers who screen passengers and their bags face missing another paycheck if the shutdown doesn’t end early this week. According to TSA, many of them say the financial hardship is preventing them from reporting to work.

SALEM, Ore. — An Oregon legislative committee will consider a bill that would allow the state to shut down the more than 600 food-related establishments operating without permits.
House Bill 2060 would allow the Oregon Department of Agriculture, which licenses and inspects non-restaurant food establishments, to condemn or close operations that refuse to get food-safety permits or let them expire.
The Statesman Journal reports owners would get 30-days’ notice before a closure order is issued. Violating the order would bring a $10,000 fine.

SPOKANE — One police officer was hospitalized and another injured during an attempt to take a domestic violence suspect into custody Sunday morning in West Central Spokane.
Police responded to a report that a man was attempting to force his way into a relative’s home on Broadway Avenue while armed with a knife just after 9 a.m. Sunday, according to a Spokane Police Department news release. Soon thereafter, officers in the area located the suspect, Jacob Wiswell, 35, walking east on Broadway, and gave several verbal commands, which he allegedly ignored.

KABUL, Afghanistan — Scores of Afghan security forces were killed Monday when a suicide bomber in a Humvee rammed a training compound of the national intelligence agency in Wardak Province, officials there said.
The Taliban insurgents immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
Security officials in Kabul speaking on the condition of anonymity, told news agencies that the death toll could reach higher than 120, with a large number wounded.

BEIRUT — U.S. forces were targeted again Monday when a suicide bomber drove a car toward a joint U.S.-Kurdish convoy and blew it up 11 yards from a checkpoint in northeastern Syria.
There were no U.S. casualties, according to a statement from the U.S.-led coalition. One Kurdish policeman was lightly injured, according to a statement from the Kurdish-led militia group.
“We will continue to review the situation and provide updates as appropriate,” said the coalition statement.
