All Massachusetts courthouses are closed today, according to the Massachusetts Trial Courts.

The first major snowstorm of 2014 brought heavy snow (more than 2 feet in some parts of the state!), strong winds, coastal flooding and dangerously cold temperatures.

Reports today out of Singapore say that North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un had his uncle executed by feeding him alive to starving dogs. The execution initially caused an uproar for its senselessness, but now reports say Jang Song Thaek died in a horrible manner. The Straits Times of Singapore said, “Then 120 hounds, starved for three days, were allowed to prey on them until they were completely eaten up. This is called ‘quan jue,’ or 'execution by dogs.'”

A Braintree man charged with stealing storm drain covers in Weymouth will also face charges of committing similar thefts in surrounding communities, according to police.

Hundreds gathered in Abington Thursday to see Marine Sergeant Daniel Vasselian laid to rest at his funeral.

The renowned Beachcomber club, which opened in 1959, is up for sale. Re/Max Realty Pros of Quincy recently listed the Beachcomber property at 797 Quincy Shore Drive for $1.6 million. The family-owned seaside bar remains open.

Sedell’s Pharmacy, an independent drug store chain, closed its remaining three stores in Lakeville, Assonet and Carver on Dec. 18. Founded in 1974, the drug store chain eventually grew to nine stores in southeastern Massachusetts – two in Easton and seven in Raynham, Lakeville, Halifax, Plymouth, Carver, Sandwich, and Assonet.
