Two candidates remain in the race for Madison County superintendent after Tuesday's Republican primary election.

 

Ritchie Whorton defeats incumbent Wayne Johnson in Alabama House District 22 GOP primary

Whorton was the subject of attacks from Johnson over his campaign finances and financial reporting. Last week Johnson apologized after alleging in a Facebook post that Horton had accepted more than $77,000 from the Alabama Education Association.

 

David Young wins Republican candidacy for Madison County coroner

Young, 30, of Hazel Green is the county's chief deputy coroner. He has worked in the office under current coroner, Craig Whisenant, for three years after working in public safety, including work with the Huntsville-Madison County Rescue Squad and Meridianville Volunteer Fire Department. He has also worked as a funeral director for Spry Funeral Homes.

 

Seibert, Melson in GOP run-off, Curtis wins Democratic bid for Alabama Senate District 1

As candidates and their campaign assistants scrambled to keep up with vote tallies from three counties in the newly created Senate District 1, Mike Curtis was declared the Democratic candidate, while Republicans Chris Seibert and Tim Melson will face a runoff.

McKay, 32, won the Republican primary Tuesday evening against challenger Glenn Watson, a former Huntsville City Councilman for 12 years. Complete but unofficial returns show McKay took 65 percent (13,472) of the vote, while Watson nabbed 35 percent (7,134).

Madison police offer tips on reducing thefts from vehicles

Police have noticed a rise in thefts from vehicles over the last several weeks. Lt. Terrell Cook said such an increase is common in the summer months as well as around Christmas. He said this is mostly because younger perpetrators are out of school or at home. He said although this is a generalization and thieves are of all ages, those arrested for car break-ins have generally been less than 30 years old.
