Sisters sentenced for alleged role in bar fight

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Two sisters from Massachusetts charged with beating a woman unconscious outside a Springfield bar have been sentenced to a year of probation and ordered to undergo anger management counseling.The Republican newspaper reports that 22-year-old Danielle Martin and 27-year-old Jessica Martin were sentenced last week after pleading to sufficient facts for a guilty finding to reduced charges of assault and battery.If they comply with probation conditions, the charges will be dismissed.

 

Fire destroys multi-million dollar home

GLOUCESTER  — A massive fire has destroyed a multi-million dollar waterfront home in Massachusetts owned in part by a famous restaurateur.The Gloucester home that burned late Saturday into Sunday morning was bought for $4.6 million in 2016 and was undergoing renovations, so no one was inside.The fire chief says the flames spread to nearby grass and trees, and there were no fire hydrants nearby. One firefighter suffered a minor injury from burning debris.It took more than four hours for firefighters to get the blaze under control.

 

Haverhill man killed by fallen tree

A Haverhill man doing spring cleanup in his yard yesterday was killed when a tree damaged by winter’s brutal weather fell on top of him, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett’s office said this morning.Haverhill fire and emergency services responded to the home on Hoyt Road at 5 p.m. and found the 60-year-old victim pinned under a tree. He was transported to Holy Family Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Blodgett’s spokeswoman Carrie Kimball-Monahan said.

 

Brockton cops shoot knife-wielding man

Plymouth District Attorney Timothy J. Cruz’s office is reviewing the circumstances surrounding a police-involved shooting in Brockton last night.Cruz spokeswoman Beth Stone said a man brandishing a large knife at officers was shot shortly after 6:30 p.m. on North Main Street in Brockton.Stone said the man was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital, then transferred to Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston for treatment of his injuries.Neither his name or his condition has been released.

 

Mobile skate park named for Red Sox fan killed in 2004 opens

EAST BRIDGEWATER, Mass. — Skateboarders in East Bridgewater have a new place to play thanks to the legacy of a town resident killed while celebrating the Boston Red Sox American League championship in 2004.The Enterprise reports that the Victoria Snelgrove Memorial Skate Park made its debut Sunday on the town common.The mobile skate park, which can be packed up and moved to different areas of town, was made possible with the help of a $25,000 grant from Snelgrove's parents.

 

Man who tried to hire hit man to kill dad faces new charges

SPRINGFIELD — A Massachusetts man who has already served time in prison for trying to hire a hit man to kill his father is in trouble with the law again, this time for allegedly threatening a woman.The Republican newspaper reports that 47-year-old John Platten faces a hearing Monday after pleading not guilty last week in Springfield to threatening to commit a crime and violating a restraining order.

 

Man clearing storm debris pinned, killed by falling tree

HAVERHILL  — Authorities say a 60-year-old man clearing debris left by recent storms has been struck and killed by a tree.A spokeswoman for the Essex district attorney tells The Eagle-Tribune the Haverhill man was working with his adult son at about 5 p.m. Sunday, cutting up a tree that had fallen during one of last month's storms.The tree he was cutting was leaning against another tree, which gave way and fell on him, pinning him to the ground.

Authorities investigating 2-alarm Gloucester blaze

Authorities are investigating the cause of an intense, two-alarm fire that destroyed a home overnight on Two Penny Lane in Gloucester.Firefighters arrived on the scene about 11:20 p.m. Saturday to find the home fully ablaze, with flames exiting the structure in multiple directions, authorities said.The Gloucester Fire Department decided to fight the fire from outside after it had determined that no one was inside the home.Authorities said the exterior attack was also used to prevent the fire from spreading and to minimize flying embers and debris.

Alleged killer Nathan James Carman has put his sprawling fixer-upper farmhouse in Vernon, Vt., on the market for more than double what he paid four years ago as he digs deep for cash to hire a lawyer.Built in 1850, the three-story, 6,207-square-foot property, which the 24-year-old Carman gutted down to framework and has been restoring while he lives there, is billed in real estate ads as “a rare and amazing opportunity” with “endless” possibilities.
