Dear Call Box: With Hemming Park being in the news again, I wondered what happened to the bandstand that used to be one of its focal points.

Dear S.J.: In its day, the bandstand played host to presidents, visiting dignitaries and a legendary figure who “kilt him a b’ar when he was only three.”
Actually, there were several bandstands going back to at least the 1870s. And in later years, they became more of a speech podium than the traditional musical venue.
