Drive Electric rally set for Sept. 16 in Jacksonville

The North Florida Clean Fuels Coalition hosts a Drive Electric Lunch-n-Learn Rally from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at North Florida TPO at 980 North Jefferson St.
The event, held during National Drive Electric Week (Sept. 10 - 18), will allow electric vehicle owners and those interested in them to learn more. Information on the area’s newest ChargeWell EV charging stations will be presented, as will information on workplace charging.

Wounded Warrior Project has begun to cut the size of its 600-person workforce as it hits the reset button after months of upheaval at the Jacksonville-based organization, which faced a backlash after media reports in January questioned its spending practices.
Layoffs began this week. Wounded Warrior did not say how many jobs would be cut when it released an announcement Wednesday about the ongoing reorganization, but more details are expected in the coming days.

 

St. Johns County prepares for Tropical Storm Hermine

Significant changes in the forecast for a tropical storm that has been developing for days in the Gulf of Mexico may spare St. Johns County residents from having to deal with storm-force winds but could still leave the county at risk for tornadoes and heavy rainfall, officials said Wednesday evening.
Tropical Storm Hermine is expected to make landfall sometime Friday morning near Apalachicola, National Weather Service meteorologist Ben Nelson said.

 

Tropical storm warning issued for First Coast; Hermine expected to be hurricane when it hits Florida's Big Bend area

A tropical storm warning has been issued from Northeast Florida to South Carolina ahead of the landfall of what is expected to become Hurricane Hermine as the storm moves toward Florida Thursday.
The storm was moving north-northeast at 12 mph with maximum sustained winds of 60 mph at 5 a.m., according to the National Hurricane Center.
Hermine was 250 miles south-southwest of Apalachicola early Thursday and expected to hit the coast late in the day or early Friday.

A top aide to U.S. Rep. Corrine Brown will meet next week with a federal judge about whether his attorney’s other clients pose problems for handling his scheduled fraud trial.
Ronnie Simmons, Brown’s chief of staff, was indicted with the congresswoman in July on charges centering on prosecutors’ contention that money donated to a scholarship organization Brown supported, One Door for Education, was used like a slush fund for their private benefit.
Simmons pleaded not guilty and is being defended by Orlando attorney Anthony Suarez.
