A widow of a victim of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center was among those killed in a plane crash near Buffalo, N.Y., late Thursday, her sister told a newspaper.

Divers in the Hudson River on Wednesday located a missing engine from US Airways Flight 1549, which went into the river last week after apparently striking a flock of birds, officials said.

As investigators looked at an earlier engine problem on US Airways Flight 1549, the airline sent $5,000 checks to each passenger to compensate them for lost luggage and other belongings.

The plane is believed to have encountered a barrage of bird strikes exceeding any such events covered by federal standards for engine durability.

Investigators expect to be able to confirm whether the US Airways jet suffered bird strikes in both of its engines.
