TV fees boost Time Warner profits

Rising TV subscription fees plumped up profits at Time Warner. The media and entertainment giant said profits in the last three months of 2012 rose 51% from a year ago to $1.2bn (£750m), despite no change in revenues. TV subscription income rose 7%, as cable and satellite operators paid more to carry channels such as CNN and TNT.

It appears CNN has hit another speed bump on its road to reinvention. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the cable network is quietly considering replacing conservative Kathleen Parker as co-host on the show currently titled Parker Spitzer. The Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist, along with her co-host, former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer, has failed to drum up the sort of buzz the news operation is after, much less garner ratings to make it competitive with rivals Fox News and MSNBC. (A CNN spokesperson told Forbes it “does not comment on speculation.”)

CNN today fired anchor Rick Sanchez a day after Sanchez assailed The Daily Show host Jon Stewart as a "bigot" and suggested that CNN and the other networks are run by Jews. Sanchez made his rant Thursday on the Sirius XM radio show "Stand Up! with Pete Dominick". CNN acted within 24 hours. "Rick Sanchez is no longer with the company. We thank Rick for his years of service and we wish him well," the Time Warner cable news channel said in a statement. Sanchez recently lost his afternoon show on CNN Rick's List, which is being replaced by CNN Newsroom. The Daily Show considered Sanchez an intellectual lightweight compared to CNN stars Anderson Cooper and Wolf Blizter and made him the butt of jokes, which Sanchez resented and thought was racist. (He's Hispanic.)

 

Jonathan Klein to Leave CNN

Jonathan Klein, the president of the beleaguered CNN/U.S. cable channel, is being replaced by Ken Jautz, the head of the sister channel HLN.
