By now Connie Britton must be a little tired of playing variations on the tough, beleaguered wife, as she did for five seasons on “Friday Night Lights” and one on “American Horror Story,” picking up three Emmy nominations along the way. But she’s back at it, this time as a country music queen in ABC’s new drama “Nashville,” and she’s still outstanding: “Nashville” is the best of the fall pilots, if only because of her presence.

The fate of the show on the network has been rocky. Last year's renewal came just days before Fox's upfront presentation.

The drama "24" won't be ticking much longer on TV. Fox announced Friday that its action-packed real-time show starring Kiefer Sutherland as anti-terrorism agent Jack Bauer will wind down at the end of its current eighth season on May 24.

Sutherland said in a statement that the show's cast and crew "always wanted '24' to finish on a high note, so the decision to make the eighth season our last was one we all agreed upon." He also said he was looking forward to creating a film version of "24."

John Wells' gritty cop drama, unceremoniously canceled by NBC before its second season premiere, has been picked up by cable network TNT as many a TV insider expected.
