AT&T caps phone data usage with new wireless plans

In time for the widely expected launch of a new iPhone model, carrier AT&T Inc. is pulling in the reins on data usage by its customers with smart phones and iPads....

Senh: I'm glad I'm not on AT&T. Although I think it's correct in assuming that 98% of the people will be able to get by with just a 2BG plan. I use my phone to update Wopular throughout the day - mostly mornings and nights. Under the $25, 2GB plan, I can view anywhere from 100-500 pages per day if each webpage averages about 100-500K. I'm using round numbers. That's plenty. Even a power user like me doesn't view that many pages per day. If you watch a lot of streaming video on YouTube, then you're screwed. 2GB would give you a max of about 2 movies, assuming each movie is about 1 hr. 30 min. I guess now you can't just hand over your phone to your kids and let them watch video. With the iPad and HD2 or Evo being advertised as multimedia devices, I don't think users would be happy with a limited data plan.

The bottom line, if you're considering an iPad purchase and you plan to take it outside of your house for any length of time, be it the park, the bus, the train, or the Internet free zone at the grandparents' house, the always connected 3G is the sure way to go. Without the Internet, the iPad is a severely handicapped device. Trust me, you're going to want the Internet. After all, this is the best Internet browsing device I've ever used.

Senh: So with 3G, the iPad is about $630. You can almost buy two netbooks with that, which has more power, more storage, supports flash, and can run all of your desktop applications. The advantage of the iPad is mobility. I can see people using this while sitting on the toilet, but not a netbook. If netbooks start offering touchscreens for the same price, then that would be a killer.

iPad 3G Video Downscaled, Blocked Over AT&T Network

In our early testing, iLounge has learned that some video delivery applications act differently over the 3G network than they do on Wi-Fi. The iPad's built-in YouTube application strips both standard and HD videos to a dramatically lower resolution over the cellular data connection, something that iTunes Store video previews notably do not do, instead staying at a higher quality and consuming a greater amount of data.
