Summit County is 175 years old. And Summit County Council is not about to let Tuesday’s milestone pass without some fanfare.Council adopted a proclamation Monday recognizing the county’s centeseptequinary anniversary.Council President Ilene Shapiro said what is now Summit County was originally part of Trumbull County until 1807 when it became part of Portage County.Back then Akron businessmen had to travel 20 miles — a full day’s journey — to Ravenna to pay taxes and file deeds.There was a lot of competition between cities and surrounding counties, but Colonel Simon Perkins used his prestige as state senator and his family’s wealth to help create Summit County in 1840.
