Savannah-Chatham Police Officer Bobby Waiters has been terminated in the wake of an Internal Affairs investigation into a shooting incident last year, according to city officials. Waiters’ status with the department had been in question since he was placed on paid administrative leave after shooting Timothy Maurice Williams, who was 23 at the time, on April 10, 2013. A grand jury in July 2013 decided not to indict Waiters on an aggravated assault charge related to the shooting. During interviews after the shooting, Williams said he had been at a club, Island Breeze, with his brother prior to the shooting and that they were outside when they heard gun shots and fled the area by jumping a fence, according to a supplemental report on the incident. When he jumped over the fence, Williams said, he was shot “onsite” with no warning or command although two residents reported hearing an officer say “freeze” before shots were fired, according to investigation reports. Williams said he did not have time to advise Waiters that he was running from a shooting.
