23 years ago, Hollywood was in a much more awkward place regarding racial representation in film. Actor Kal Penn is proof of that. In an interview with Rolling Stone marking the 20th anniversary of the classic comedy Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, Penn discussed the challenges he faced as an Indian actor in Hollywood, and how an audition for his breakout role in National Lampoon's Van Wilder had him competing against a guy in brownface.
