On the depth chart Cal issued Tuesday, he’s listed as the No. 2 “boundary” or strong safety, although — like the rest of the safeties — he also can play “field” or free safety. If Rubenzer had elected to stay at quarterback, there was the chance that he’d be redshirted, head coach Sonny Dykes said. [...] Rubenzer told offensive coordinator Tony Franklin that he wanted to be on the field, in some capacity. Franklin told him that defensive coordinator Art Kaufman had wondered if Rubenzer might be willing to switch to defense. From the start of training camp, Dykes said that if Rubenzer wasn’t going to play 30 or 40 snaps a game on defense, he’d probably be switched back to quarterback. Don’t look for Rubenzer to reappear as the change-of-pace running quarterback again, Dykes said. When he came on the field, he said, the Cardinal started yelling, “8’s in the game!” and geared up to stop his running. Because of his size — 6-foot, 195 pounds — he thinks he has a better chance of making the NFL as a safety than as a quarterback.
