One of the memorable tunes in Broadway’s greatest hit of 1946 would make a fitting theme song for Ron DeSantis’ floundering presidential campaign. The show: Irving Berlin’s “Annie Get Your Gun.” The song: “Anything you can do, I can do better,” by co-stars Ethel Merman and Ray Middleton. To hear DeSantis these days, anything that former president Donald Trump might do, he can do better. Pandering to the fringes Especially if it comes to pandering to the fringes of the electorate with vindictiveness, hypocrisy and cruelty. It’s as if Trump’s vices are, to DeSantis, virtues on which to improve. Within recent days, DeSantis promised not just to finish building Trump’s failed border wall, but also threatened to invade Mexico to battle drug cartels, shoot suspected smugglers on sight, give Texas the authority to deport people, and — astonishingly — repeal birthright citizenship. Then he doubled down, in a Fox News interview, on crippling the government by abolishing the departments of Education, Commerce and Energy, along with the IRS.
