HUGHES David Helms Pontotoc Progress PONTOTOC – A Pontotoc County man was sentenced to two consecutive life sentences, without the possibility of parole, after pleading guilty to two charges of capital murder on Tuesday afternoon. Circuit Judge Jim Pounds passed sentence after defendant Carl Victor Hughes pleaded guilty to the capital murders of Pontotoc County residents Donald and Evelyn Baker, who were bludgeoned to death in their Shady Grove Community home on May 3, 2015. Hughes, one month shy of his 28th birthday, was scheduled to go on trial next Monday on the capital murder charges. A jury pool of 500 local residents had been summoned as potential jurors. But shortly after 1:33 p.m.
