North Valley Mission A Concern For Residents

The president of the Near North Valley Neighborhood Association says the area is getting “hammered” by homeless people who are drawn to North Valley neighborhoods to receive services that they can’t get anywhere else in the city. President Richard Sandoval and other residents said the issue has been longstanding, but the potential opening of a new facility near Wells Park will exacerbate diminishing property values, high crime and other issues he said result from the high concentration of homeless people. The association made the topic the primary issue of discussion during its annual meeting Tuesday night at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. About 50 attendees heard city Councilor Isaac Benton, county officials and representatives from the two missions in the area – Albuquerque Rescue Mission and The Rock at Noonday – discuss issues around homelessness and the governing entities’ efforts to improve services and resources for impoverished, drug-addicted or mentally ill residents. They also addressed what they said was a necessity of adding more services where homeless people congregate.

    By BRETT MARTEL NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl between Georgia and Notre Dame has been postponed after a truck plowed into a New Year’s crowd about a mile away early Wednesday, killing at least 10 people. The game, originally scheduled for Wednesday night at the 70,000-seat Superdome, has been pushed back 24 hours to Thursday night. “For now, that’s the plan,” Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley said. The Superdome was on lockdown for security sweeps on Wednesday morning, when people with offices in the Superdome — including officials with the Sugar Bowl and Sun Belt Conference — were told not to come into work until further notice. Some credentialed Superdome employees were permitted into offices by Wednesday afternoon. The casualties occurred when a driver rammed a pickup truck into a crowd of revelers in New Orleans’ famed French Quarter early on New Year’s Day.
