During World War II, some 350,000 women served in the U.S. military, and around 150,000 of them served in the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps (WAAC), later the Women’s Army Corps (WAC). Created in May 1942, the WAAC was the first unit to allow women to take on military roles in the U.S. Army other than nursing. More @Wikipedia
