Bookmark or Share- What is the right word to refer to a black person, when you don't know ...I don't remember your colleague's name, but he was the black gentleman at the managerial department. Or, you can lessen the impact of identifying someone strictly by skin color by using other identifiers in addition: I don't recall your colleague's name; he wears glasses and has a cubicle next to the water cooler; an African gentleman.
- Adjective for someone that refuses help from others?I don't think that the word independent or altruistic would be suitable for this. While this question was close to what I was looking for, it is an adjective that describes someone that refuses help for the sake of helping others.
- Sarah couldn't [go]/ [come] because she was sickSarah couldn't go because she got sick yesterday (and is still sick today), and Peter couldn't go because he had to go to work. John was the only one who went. Since Peter didn't know that Sarah was sick, he asked John after the party if he and Sarah had enjoyed it. John replied: "I did, but Sarah couldn't go because she was sick."
- "Are you working today" or "Do you work today?"If I don't normally work on Tuesdays, but today is Tuesday and I happen to be covering Carol's shift for her, and if you asked me, "Do you work today," I would try my best to guess your meaning and I would answer, "Yes," because you asked me about today and not about Tuesdays in general. This would be bad, because I just gave the wrong answer ...
- i-th vs. iᵗʰ vs. ith - English Language Learners Stack ExchangeInteresting. This looks like a special case because "ith" would look odd in writing... so to specifically clarify and make it obvious that it's a variable, the hyphen is used - "i-th" But, in general, I do not believe this form would be used. The more common use for an undefined term is "nth"... which won't be confused with anything else ...
