- Downtown vs City Center/Centre - WordReference ForumsCanadian English. Apr 30, 2007. #2. I grew up learning predominantly BE and have always referred to "downtown". As a matter of fact, the term "city centre" is a relatively new phrase (in the last two decades - at least in Canada). I have a suspicion that "city centre" has arisen as cities have grown.
