"That building is 3 stories tall." These do not mean that they are taller than other things that are comparable. It just means they are that much in height. He is 6ft. tall = he is 6ft. in height.

On the other hand, it makes good sense to speak of the 'west side of the campus', because a campus can be seen as having sides. When referring to a side, 'on' is the usual preposition: 'on the left side', 'on either side' etc.
