- Thickening watercolour paints???? - WetCanvas: Online Living for ArtistsGum arabic could also be used; gum arabic and honey are the main binders for watercolor pigments. I think something called “ox gall” slows drying, while alcohol (among other things) makes it dry faster. Watercolor is seldom applied “thickly” because the dried pigment may “bronze” (develop an unpleasant metalic-looking sheen on top).

Make sure the edition you rely on is recent – my local library has only a 5-year-old edition. I have the 2001-2002 edition, and I’ll get the newest one as soon as I see that it’s available.

These things did come from large, naturally occuring, underground deposits called mines…which are right down there with the water table. Mind I’m writing this in a watercolor forum: Oil and acrylic disposal is another thing.
