Bookmark or Share- Does vertical tracking angle affect sound? What is the purpose?Just a note that VTA is the angle of the cantilever that should match the cutting angle. This is a factor that is independent on the type of stylus tip. A mismatch gives harmonic distortion and intermodulation distortion. The corresponding lateral tracking angle is set by a protractor.

Three of my favorite cartridges require a certain VTA setting of level +1/2 mm to sound their best. Lowering or raising them by 1 mm or so changes the sound unacceptably. One cartridge I had wasn't finicky at all with VTA and sounded the same +/- 2mm .
