Bookmark or Share- What is the correct supply voltage for LEDs?LEDs are nonlinear devices -- their current vs. voltage curve is exponential with voltage. In practical terms, it means that essentially no current flows at low voltages, and then the current very rapidly rises. In the case of your LED, that "low voltage" is around 1.6V. If you look at the datasheet, figure 2, you'll see this.
