From 1940 through 1954, Thomson was the lead music critic for the New York Herald Tribune newspaper. As critic, he gained a reputation for falling asleep during subpar operas and concerts. His reviews, however, were always well-written, often provocative, and sometimes belittling. More @Wikipedia
