Ford did it because he came up with a new and more productive way of making cars, and he need to keep his workers, all of whom were non-union in 1914. The turn-over rate at his factory was 317% prior to the raise! So workers obviously were non-union, and they had alternative employment opportunities as the workers quit, not fired by Ford.
