You want more story: an additional character with their own arc, a sub-plot with its own conflict and resolution, or get deeper into a character's flaws and how this story in particular is THE story that challenges those flaws….
- How should I use phrases such as "uh huh"? - Writing Stack Exchangeuh huh (which I take for a yes) uh uh (for no) nuh uh (also saw that once for no, but I'm not even sure nuh is even a word) whereas a standalone "huh?" usually means the person doesn't understand something. Are these commonly associated with the meanings I have assumed (either in American English, or elsewhere)? Are there others I have missed?
- How much do you get for publishing an article in the newspaper?AFAIK, people usually don't get paid for that sort of thing. It's like a letter to the editor. The reward is getting your story/poem/essay in the paper.
- How does American English sound to non-English speakers?I'd go a step further and say "all right" (the only recognizable phrase) is more like "awwrite", which is a meaningless idiom in Americanese that simply acknowledges that something was heard, or a low-key confirmation that something was understood (uh-huh, OK, yeah-yeah).
