Tyrannosaurus rex is the best-known and largest member of a group of theropod dinosaurs called tyrannosaurs; its scientific name is Latin for “king of the tyrant lizards.” Since 1902 paleontologists have recognized the T. rex as the only formal member of the genus Tyrannosaurus.

Tyrannosaurus was a bipedal carnivore with a massive skull balanced by a long, heavy tail. Compared to the large and powerful hind limbs, its forelimbs were small, but powerful for their size. They had two clawed digits. It was the last known tyrannosaurid. There is discussion as to whether it was a hunter or a scavenger.
