The Townshend Acts were a series of laws passed by the British Parliament in 1767 that imposed new taxes on the American colonies. The acts, which were named after Charles Townshend, the British Chancellor of the Exchequer, levied taxes on imported goods such as glass, paint, lead, and tea. More @Wikipedia
