A tilt-rotor is an aircraft with its proprotors going from the vertical position for take-off to the horizontal position for cruise and back to vertical for landing. As a result, the tilt-rotor enjoys the best of both helicopters that can take off and land virtually anywhere and fixed-wing airplanes that can cruise more efficiently – and quietly. More @Wikipedia
