A transient ischemic attack (TIA) occurs when blood flow is temporarily blocked to an area of the brain. People who've had a TIA are at an increased risk of having a stroke in the near future.

In a TIA, unlike a stroke, the blockage is brief and there is no permanent damage. The blockage that occurs during a TIA often results from a buildup of cholesterol-containing fatty deposits called plaques in an artery. This is known as atherosclerosis.

The decrease may last as little as five minutes. A transient ischemic attack is sometimes known as a ministroke. A TIA occurs when a blood clot or fatty deposit reduces or blocks blood flow to part of the nervous system.
