We talk about 'the low two thousands' (2000 to perhaps about 2300) and 'the low thousands' (somewhere over 1000 to about 3000, but not a larger number of thousands).

Once again, it may be the logic that I try to impose on a completely illogical language but since there are many thousands of thousands, I just naturally think of it in the plural. To me, "a thousand" is just that - a single unit of one thousand (1,000). Same can be said for "dozen", etc.

- tens of thousands - WordReference ForumsI think it would be more typical to switch to "nearly 100,000" or "over 100,000" once you hit the 100,000 mark. To me, tens of thousands means somewhere between 20,000 and 90,000 but more likely under 50,000. These terms are often used when no one knows the exact count but they know that it is at least the minimum indicated by the phrase.
