Terre Haute is on the National Road, the United States’ first federally-funded national highway, a national scenic byway, running from Cumberland, Maryland to Vandalia, Illinois. This 620-mile road was constructed from 1811 to 1837, and became the second road in the country to be surfaced with the innovative Macadam process. More @Wikipedia
