At the beginning of A New Hope, we see Vader's ship chasing the Tantive IV, eventually overpowering it. How was Vader able to find the Tantive IV? Presumably through some method of tracking the ship through hyperspace, but this raises more questions:
- What happened to the crew and guards of the Tantive IV?The Tantive IV was the historic Alderaanian consular ship that shuttled the Death Star plans away from Scarif after the Rebel Alliance's first victory. A faulty hyperdrive subsystem allowed the Empire to track and intercept it over Tatooine.
- Why did the Imperial Star Destroyer open fire on the Tantive IV?Both vessels had just entered Tatooine’s orbit when the Devastator’s lasers scored a direct hit on the Tantive IV’s primary sensor array. The array exploded, and the blast overloaded the starboard shield projector — which caused another explosion, damaging the power generator system and triggering a chain reaction throughout the ship.
