If you take your family on long trips several times a week, they make less sense than a minivan (worse fuel economy, more expensive).

I've rented minivans and SUVs (which were really minivans w/o sliding doors) that had terrible passenger seats. If you are hauling little kids perhaps it doesn't matter too much. If you are hauling older teens and adults - test those seats.
- So is the SUV craze largely an American way of waste?Where as my experience in the US was probably a similar percentage of total SUVs, but a much higher proportion being in the very large category. My travels elsewhere (rest of pacific, Asia, Europe, middle east) had a vastly lower percentage of SUVs in the passenger vehicle mix, with car stocks being more biased towards smaller cars in general.
- Honda Fit discontinued for the US - Mr. Money MustacheI'd call it a win if 'light trucks' (which currently engulf pickups, most SUVs and other cars that have high ground clearance, aka the Subary Forester) were included in the passenger 'fleet vehicles' which require an average 37.8mpg (moving towards the Obama 54.5mpg), rather than getting their own seperate category of 28.8mpg.
- Author Topic: Best car/hatchback/SUV to sleep in during a long-term ...Another vote of Hyundai Elantra...though we have the precursor to the GT, the Touring. The Touring, last model is 2012, is more of a wagon than a hatchback so has extra room. It actually feels like a small car up front and when driving but then has tons of space in the back. Better than many small SUVs.
