The tried-and-true method is to preset the focus manually, use an aperture between ƒ/5.6-16 and simply walk closer or farther away so the subject is in the focus zone. The focus zone can be seen on the distance scale in the viewfinder (the 2.8/14, 1.4/16 and 1.4/23 lenses have it printed on the barrel). More @Wikipedia
