Bookmark or Share- New crash tests show modest speed increases can have deadly consequencesWith posted speed limits increasing on roadways around the country, a vehicle’s ability to protect drivers in crashes is in doubt. Small speed increases can have huge effects on crash outcomes, as shown in new crash tests by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Humanetics.
- Speed limit increases are tied to 37,000 deaths over 25 years - IIHS-HLDIMaximum speed limits are set by the states, and they have been rising since the mid-1990s. Proponents of raising the speed limit often argue that such increases simply bring the law in line with reality, since most drivers exceed the limit. Once the limit is raised, however, drivers go even faster.
