In many Indian languages, there isn't exactly any equivalent of "cousin". All our cousins are [prefix]-brother or [prefix]-sister, the prefix indicating what sort of unkill or anti were they born out of. But in colloquial speech, we just tend to omit the prefixes, and refer to cousins as "brothers" or "sisters". That seeps into our English as well. More @Wikipedia
