Bookmark or Share- 'Twilight Zone' from Sharktooth Hill, Bakersfield, CaliforniaThe shark teeth from Bakersfield are quite special. thank you! oftentimes when i pull colorful teeth out of the ground, it's hard to tell how they end up looking after oxidizing over a few days, but will try to post a tooth called "zephyr" shortly, it's got a really rich dusk purple on the labial side even after oxidizing.
- Is it possible to ID these shark and mosasaur teeth?After further study, I've concluded that the shark tooth can be identified as "cf. Serratolamna maroccana Arambourg, 1935", and the mosasaur teeth (all three) as "Prognathodon cf. currii Christiansen & Bonde, 2002". Below, I've listed the key resources I used to support these identifications, although I have consulted several additional materials.
- presentation of understanding shark tooth features for identification ...The vast majority of shark teeth are under an inch long so a 1-inch tooth would be considered large unless it's from a genus with clearly larger adult teeth. That chart given above is a little busy. The term "transverse ridge" refers to raised segments of enameloid.
- Post pictures of the oldest lamniform shark teeth!My assumption was that lamniform sharks didn't really take off until the steady decline of the old Jurassic era regime like ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs (pliosaurs) into the Cretaceous that were eventually devastated by the Cenomanian-Turonian (OAE 2) extinction.
- A Potomac River Shark Teeth Hunt - The Fossil ForumFrom what I can see in your pictures, you might have found some Carcharhinus (requiem shark) teeth, but I'm not entirely sure. The larger, more curved ones might belong to the Hemipristis (snaggletooth shark), and the smaller, triangular ones could be from a Sand Tiger shark. The other pieces look like eagle ray teeth and maybe some other fish ...
